Frankfurt – Germany’s Modern Metropolis on the Main

Frankfurt am Main, often simply called Frankfurt, is one of Germany’s most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities. Known as the country’s financial powerhouse, it is home to the European Central Bank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and countless international corporations. Yet beyond the glass skyline that has earned it the nickname “Mainhattan”, Frankfurt reveals a rich cultural and historical depth that makes it far more than just a business hub.

The city’s historic heart, the Römerberg, offers a glimpse into Frankfurt’s medieval past, with half-timbered houses, cobbled squares, and the Gothic St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, where emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were once crowned. Not far away, the Goethe House celebrates the legacy of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Germany’s most famous writer, who was born here in 1749.

Frankfurt also stands out as one of Germany’s greenest cities. The Palmengarten, a vast botanical garden, and the banks of the River Main provide spaces for relaxation and outdoor activities. The riverfront is also home to the city’s celebrated Museumsufer, a collection of world-class museums ranging from art and film to history and ethnology.

The contrast between old and new defines Frankfurt’s identity. Towering skyscrapers overlook traditional apple wine taverns in the Sachsenhausen district, where locals gather to drink Apfelwein and enjoy hearty Hessian dishes. Its international airport, one of the busiest in the world, makes it a true gateway to Europe, drawing millions of travelers every year.

Frankfurt is not only a city of finance and commerce but also one of literature, culture, and history, a place where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously. Whether you are strolling through its medieval streets, admiring the skyline from the Main Tower, or immersing yourself in its vibrant culinary scene, Frankfurt reveals itself as a city full of character, bridging Germany’s past with its future.
